Nepal earthquake: a look back at how the UK food industry helped make a difference

Restaurants have rallied together to raise over £50,000 for survivors of the earthquake

Following a rallying tweet from restaurant The Sticky Walnut, over 250 restaurants raised over £50,000 towards our emergency response in Nepal.   

The generosity of restaurants knows no limits

This fantastic support largely started with a simple tweet from the owner of The Sticky Walnut in Chester, Gary Usher. Having decided they would hold a fundraising night in their restaurant to help families affected by the devastating quake, he posted on Twitter asking if any other chefs and restaurants would consider hosting a fundraiser too. 48 hours later, the hashtag #RestaurantsUniteForNepal had gained momentum and over 150 restaurants, bars and pubs were involved. Businesses supporting the initiative include Michelin starred restaurants, Fullers Brewery pubs as well as MeatLiquor, Cinnamon Kitchen and Fazenda amongst many others.

Within one week over 250 restaurants, chefs and food companies were fundraising for Nepal with the support of PR companies and other key food influencers around the UK.

The positive impact of social media

The speed and spontaneity of people from across the UK wanting to lend a hand was truly incredible. Ninety per cent of all sign-ups came from social media alone, demonstrating the incredible example of the positive impact of social media in times of crisis.

There is something very special about people in the UK being able to celebrate food whilst raising funds to help provide food for families who have lost everything in Nepal. In times like this, doing what you do best is always the very greatest thing anyone can do. And it wasn’t just about chefs and  restaurants hosting fundraiser dining events; private companies donated prizes to raffles, PR companies pushed fundraisers through media contacts and influencers in towns and cities up and down the countries urged their friends to get involved.

Three months on, here’s a snap shot of just a few of the events and fundraisers held in support of our Nepal emergency appeal:

  • Brett Sutton chef proprietor of The White Post in Dorset rounded up an incredible list of South West chefs, including Mat Follas, Andrew Kojima, Rich Townsend and Ben Abercrombie. The gastronomical fundraising feast saw different chefs prepare a different course each, raising £4,455. Fazenda Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds asked customers for donations for the month of May, and then doubled these donations to raise amazing £2,323 altogether. 
     
  • Sticky Walnut in Chester hosted a one off fundraiser evening with donations and proceeds reaching over £1,000. But they decided that wasn’t enough and hosted the ‘Chips for Charity’ initiative, donating all funds from each portion of chips sold to bring their total up to over £1,300.
     
  • ‘Chips for Charity’ was then adopted by MEATLiquor (London, Brighton and Leeds) and CHICKENLiquor. They not only donated takings from chip sales, which raised £1,856, but then asked customers in all branches to make a donation for Nepal at the end of their meal, raising an incredible £12,393!
     
  • Around the country, Parkers Arms in Lancashire, The Dining Room in North Wales, Cinnamon Kitchen, Hawksmoor, Moleface Pubs, High Moor Restaurant in Wigan, Urbano in Chester, The Plough Inn in Hampshire, Rock Salt in Kent, The Yellow House, The Swan in Cornwall, The Crooked Billet in Wokingham, Splendid Kitchen in Manchester and many more asked for customers for donations on their bills.   
     
  • The Red Lion Pub hosted a fundraising BBQ and raffle with Melissa Cole. This initiative was then picked up by their parent company, Fullers, and a fundraiser was rolled out across all of their pubs.  
     
  • Bibendum PLB Group raised £1,640 through employees. Whole Foods Market raised £7,502.00 by collecting donations at their checkouts nationwide.
