Georgia is located in the Caucasus, bordering both Europe and Asia. Its most recent tensions with neighbouring Russia became ominous in 2008 when an initial 130,000 people from Abkhazia, Sidha Kartli and South Ossetia became displaced.
As some of the internally displaced have been able to return home, around a quarter of a million people remain displaced. The conflict between Georgia and Russia remains unresolved today and, coupled with Georgia’s unstable economy, has contributed to widespread food insecurity among the country’s most at-risk communities.
What we are doing
Action Against Hunger has been present in Georgia since 1994 and we have focused efforts on our long-term food security programmes. We work closely with the most vulnerable families and improve their living conditions by identifying income-generating activities and providing training in conflict resolution. We also aim to strengthen community participation through ownership of our water, sanitation and hygiene programmes.
